So starting my own blog isn't an original idea, but I figured it would be a nice way to keep in touch with everyone while I'm in school for the next decade or so :) The blogging idea really came from other people in lab who have their own blogs to document either their new families or good recipes. I don't really have a family right now and I'm kind of short on the recipes, but in 8 years I'm hoping that I can share those things with you too!
In any case, I'm just finishing up my time in a biochemistry lab that I've worked in since I was a freshman in college. I've really enjoyed my time in lab and I've been fortunate to learn a lot about RNA and its structure and function. I don't know if this area of science is something I will pursue for my Ph.D., but Boulder is a great place to do it if I want. Tom Cech, a Nobel prize winner for his work on RNA, is located in Boulder and it would be great to do a rotation in his lab.
In any case, I have roughly a month and a half left in my lab here at Yale. I am trying to finish a paper I have been writing for quite awhile so I can have it submitted before I leave. I also have been traveling to New York City quite a few weekends. I figure it is the last time I will be on the East Coast for awhile, so I want to make the most out of it.
In any case, I met up with one of the other girls who is going to be in my MD/PhD program and visited a wonderful gallery in Chelsea to see some of Picasso's last artwork. Here is a good New York Times article on the gallery: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/17/arts/design/17pica.html
I would say that in the past few months, I have been extremely interested in art and having a greater appreciation for all of the art that is in this region. On another weekend in New York City when I was jogging to Central Park, I came across the Frick Collection which is a couple of blocks from the Met. I later went back and it was a great experience! $5 for a tour and audio guide of this charming museum and the private art collection of Francis Clay Frick- I am sure this is a museum that most native New Yorkers know about, but it was such a pleasant surprise for me: http://www.frick.org/. I would highly recommend it for anyone because it's small enough to look through everything in one afternoon and the audio guide is great.
I have a list of probably 10 more things I liked to see before I leave. Topping this list is probably more galleries, finding wonderful places to eat brunch on Sunday, and just enjoying the city in the early spring/summer. I will keep you updated as I find other great places!
